![]() He has had a hand in illustrating pieces for Jake Hunter: Detective Stories, Virtua Fighter, Tekken, Wizardry and more. To American audiences, he is perhaps best known for contributing to Nintendo Power, specifically for several Legend of Zelda games, Secret of Mana, Dragon Warrior and potentially others. Katsuya Teruda, aka “RAKUGAKING”, has been illustrating for video games for quite some time. You can look at the development of the illustration here. The exquisite linework, composition and coloring combine to create a divine example of video game box art, and it’s a shame Konami abandoned it during their localization of Masaya’s port of the game for North America and Europe. Prince of Persia is an iconic puzzle/platformer, but this particular illustration exceeds at capturing the intrigue of the game’s narrative better than anything else I’ve seen. #2 Prince of Persia (SNES, JP, Masaya/Arsys) An intense attention to detail, a dynamic design, and mood off the charts, his rendition of Miria is easily my favorite piece of video game box art of all time. ![]() Naoyuki Kato has created a wide array of video game art, ranging from R-Type to Culdcept, but I feel Guardic Gaiden is his masterpiece. Miria is one of several cyborg women attempting to save the universe, and her quest takes her through several pockets of the wayward planet Naju to try to destroy it before it crashes into Earth. #1 Guardic Gaiden (Famicom, Japan, Irem/Compile)Ĭompile’s spinoff from its earlier shmup Guardic took its gameplay into an entirely new genre half vertical shooter, half Zelda-like action/adventure. ![]() Not all 25 made it onto the list, but that’s okay I’ll at least be a little closer to having a completed feature, lol. I ran a popularity contest thread on the forum I frequent a couple years ago, and some of these box arts were discussed there, so in the interest of generating some comments I’m going to pull those little blurbs I did on boxes I like from there to here. So, I’ve had a “ Top 25 VG Box Art” post on LVLS+ for quite some time now, but for one reason or another I haven’t really gotten the itch to resurrect Artistic Discussion as much as I thought I’d might, so only a few of those boxes got any sort of write up. ![]()
